Ricoh is a major supplier of printing machines and copiers, plus support consumables and spare parts. Ricoh import stock ranges from overseas suppliers for national distribution to Australian and some near country customers. Growth in range and volume had left Ricoh with three separate warehouses in Sydney, plus some off-site storage for overflow of consumables range.
Henderson Logistics were initially engaged to develop the concept design for a future consolidated national distribution centre to house the combined activities from each of the existing warehouses. Once a concept design was completed, Ricoh selected a suitable site in Western Sydney, and Henderson’s provided a final detailed design to installation quality for the operation and fit-out of the new 6,000 m2 national distribution and service complex. The facility design also had allowance for future expansion to over 9,000 m2.
This site can accommodate forecast storage of 6,000 pallets and skids in a mix of seven-high double-deep and selective racking, plus carton live storage, seven-metre-high vertical carousels and high-rise shelving serviced by man up stock pickers for spare parts processing.
The detailed design was followed by the tender process for racking and equipment fitout plus Henderson’s also project managed installation and commissioning. This also included relocation of existing equipment with consequent reduction in capital expenditure for set up of the new facility.
Part of the upgrade also included installation of a new Warehouse Management System (WMS) including full barcode scanning and RF communications. Henderson Logistics developed the new operating procedures and operating specifications for the WMS and conducted the tender for the most suitable provider.
Project Management of the installation and commissioning were also conducted by Henderson’s on site. Ricoh are now fully operational in this new distribution centre and have achieved significant benefits in operating performance.
